The Feldenkrais Method ® was developed by Moshe Feldenkrais (1904-1984) after he suffered a
knee injury and was told his chances for full recovery were slim. Using his knowledge of anatomy,
physiology, psychology, and martial arts, he discovered that we typically only use 5% of the body’s
flexibility and range of movement. In many cases these limitations can lead to chronic pain, tension,
and stiffness. A large percentage of chronic pain results not from tissue damage or disease, but from
a chronic muscular hypertonicity that is habitually maintained by the nervous system. This generates
pain and numbness and usually muscles get chronically sore. By learning better voluntary control of
the involved muscles, a person can break the tension-habit underlying their pain. When you end the
unnecessary, involuntary, hypertonicity through movement, you often end the pain and stiffness as a
result. With the Feldenkrais Method ® we literally re-educate the brain and nervous system to realize
there are other options of movement and comfort than those we have been previously limited to due
to chronic pain or disease.
Communicating through gentle touch and movement, the teacher helps to guide you in your one-on
one process of self-discovery. The Feldenkrais Method ® can help you overcome limitations and
pain brought on by stress, misuse, accident, injury, trauma, or illness. Anyone can benefit from
this ingenious and gentle work.
